    Hi folks,

I’m headed on a trip to Poland and Israel in April and I’ll be filming tons of footage while I’m there on a panasonic hvx200 HD camera. I’ll need to have a laptop while I’m there to do quick edits every night of what I’ve shot.

I was offered to buy a black macbook, 2.0 core duo with 2gb memory for $400. Do you think I’ll be ok using final cut pro on that machine? I won’t be doing anything too complex while I’m there… just basic capturing and editing.

    Thanks!

    Hi Ari,

A friend of mine has a blackbook 2.0 w/ 4GB that runs FCP quite smoothly. For basic capturing and editing you should be fine.

That is really great to hear… I’ll think I’ll be going through with it then.

    Thanks!

you will bring external drive with to hold the media right? as a back up, consider installing FCP on that drive as well then if you have any problems w/the app on the mac you can boot from the external drive (via FW) and still be in business.

Yup, I am bringing an external drive.
That’s a great suggestion about booting from the external drive. Does that mean I’ll have to install all my software on the external drive including the OS?

    Thanks,
    Ari

if there was a problem w/FC on the laptop booting from the external will run the program.. if the OS on the laptop is messed up then you could not run the FC app.. so, for emergencies I would load the OS to the external drive too.. I have booted Tiger in the past from an external thru firewire (don’t think it would boot by USB..) also, I think it must be the same source disc as the macbook, something about root level protection that won’t let you open your OS from a different mac? I’m pretty hazy on that.. If I were going on an extended trip I’d want all the redundancy I could get.
