  • Black lines appearing on rendered 3D animated text

Usually when Im having any problems with AE, I will just Google it. And usually, the first link is to an extremely helpful Creative Cow forum. Well, I apparently cannot explain this problem correctly to Google, so I decided to cut out the middle man.

I’m relatively new to AE, still trying to figure out the best/most effective way to do things. In one part of the video I’m making I have some rapid fire rankings appearing on screen briefly. They are pre-comped 3D layers, so in the main layer is where I have my camera and my light.

When I export it (or preview) these black lines appear over some of the text. All of the text is in the same planar position. I don’t understand what could be causing this, and why it’s only on about 1/3 of the text and not all of it? Any speculations are appreciated.

Try moving the layers apart in 3D space, starting at 1 pixel, and gradually more if the problem is not solved. Having 3D layers coplanar in Z space generally causes problems.

You can do the 1 pixel move, or, if you put a 2d adjustment layer between 3d layers that are flickering, it will force one to render on top of the other.

We use the adjustment layer method if the comps were to complicated with 3d layers, and moving one pixel would cause a catastrophe.

The adjustment layer trick seemed to work swimmingly, as far as the preview goes. Thanks so much! Next stop, Render Queue.

Thanks for the explanation of why this is happening and the pixel tip. “The more you know…”!
