Black leader in Vegas?
Posted by William Mims on September 29, 2010 at 9:23 pmBoth in film cutting and linear editing on tape I could splice in black leader as a ‘slug’ for a section I wanted to come back to later to fix. In Vegas (Pro 9e) I don’t know how to do that so the downstream cuts don’t jump forward and/or move out of place as I work on different sections of the time line. I am looking for something besides adding text media.
Any ideas on how to do that? Thanks,
Mims

September 29, 2010 at 9:33 pmYes, do this additional work as a separate project. Then when you are ready, bring that veg file into the full film timeline. If you need to make any further tweaks to this section, just open the separate project, make the change, and the veg file in the full project timeline will automatically update. Martin

Make a timeline selection for the duration of the “slug” and then right-click within the timelime selection and choose Insert Empty Event. An empty event for the duration of the selection will be added to the timeline. You can do this for video and audio and even group them with the ‘G’ key to have them move together. You can also adjust the length of the event afterwards. Empty events are basically media slugs.
Later to fill in the slug, Right-click+Drag the media over the empty slug and choose Add as Take and your media will replace the slug.

September 30, 2010 at 12:05 pmMartin, thanks. I am glad to know about that technique for certain needs and I will use it from time to time. And John thanks for your input, what you suggest is exactly what I was needing as it works more like working with film and linear tape of which I am more familiar. Obviously Vegas does a whole lot more than meets the eye, I just keep discovering new things. Who has the best tutorial that I can purchase?
Thanks to you both, greatly appreciated.Mims

I’d like to think that VASST does but I work for them so I may be biased; 😉 but we do offer a lot of great training on Vegas. Check out the Absolute Training Series for Vegas Pro.
