  • Black Flicker Frames in Timeline Viewer in DaVinci 16

Posted by Sascha Engel on August 19, 2019 at 2:46 pm

    Hi,

I made the mistake to upgrade already to DVR16, which I usually never do in an early stage of an app.

Now, I just got reminded to why I usually never do it:
Having glitches in V16 – when I playback the TL, I get occasionally black flash frames popping in once in a while.

How can I solve that issue?
    It’s a V16 bug?

    Best,

    Sascha

Which hardware (CPU, GPU, RAM, disk I/O speed)? What specific version of Resolve? What OS? What source material? What timeline resolution? What framerate?

    Hi Marc,

    It’s a Hackintosh, i7, 32GB RAM, NVIDIA 980ti 6GB, SSD hard Drive with
    500MB/sec speed.
Material is 4K proxy Apple ProRes.
    25fps.
    And it’s DVR studio V16.0.

But there’s no connection to the specs or material.
Just before the update to 16, everything was fine.
Never had any issues like that on any version before.
And I’m using DaVinci on this Hackintosh since
    V9.

It’s clearly connected to the updated DVR, since that’s the only thing
That changed before the problem started.

    Best,

    Sascha.

[Sacha Engel] “It’s clearly connected to the updated DVR, since that’s the only thing

When I updated to 16 it specifically asked for an up to date NVIDIA driver. My guess is the old 980 card and driver running in Mac OS is part of the issue. The fact that Mac OS doesn’t support NVIDIA drivers might be the issue. The other thing is 6gig of GPU ram is less than recommended for 4k files.

The reliably better performance of 16 will only be apparent if the GPU and drivers are more recent perhaps. I’m running a PC with offcial NVIDIA drivers and a GTX1080 and your problem is not a known bug.
If you did the install and kept V15 as I suggested you can always stay on 15 until you can sort this out.

    Hi Michael,

    Thanx for the detailed answer.
Regarding the OS: I’m on 10.13.6 so it should still
    Support NVIDIA.
And regarding going back to 15:
I made the, admittedly, huge error to not back up my data base, since I never had an issue updating.
So, I still have DVR 15, bit I doubt the Data Base is backward compatible.

    Or is there a way?

    Best,

    Sascha

    Hi Michael,

I did also a checking with the Blackmagic RAW SpeedTest App:
My set up can deal in “Metal” setting with BRaw 3:1 up to Full 4K in 60fps with a breeze,
so I doubt that an Apple HD ProRes Proxy files would cause such flickers (on the editing page with 0 effects set to half playback resolution).

Also: On my external grading monitor it’s not flickering at all. Only on the GUI. So, I don’t think it ‘s cause of a lack of beef in either GPU nor Software Version of the NVIDIA Driver.

    Best,

    Sascha

Please, let me know, if you have any suspicion, to what this could be caused by.
The issue drives me nuts for real.

It’s a nightmare to edit with this black frame flickers.

    Thanx so much.

I might have found a solution to the issue.
Not 100% sure yet, have to check how consistent it is:

Go to Preferences -> System -> General and switch off the option “Use Mac Display Color Profiles for Viewers”
