  • Black dots on texture, can anyone tell me what are they?

Posted by David Cabestany on May 13, 2016 at 9:48 pm

I’m trying to replicate this material:

I created a material with a fresnel on the alpha channel and a light blue on the luminance channel. that gave me the blue glowy contour of the shape. then I created another material with a 3D gradient on the luminance channel.

I haven’t figured out the reflectiveness yet.

It looks close to what I’m looking for, but there are several black spots on the surface that I don’t quite understand why they are happening.

I’m applying each material to instances of an original untextured object which is hidden.

Can anyone tell me what are those dots?

    Thanks in advance.

you have multiple instances occupying the same space?

Yes, they are in the exact same coordinates.

and you are using Transparency to mix the textures? If so, you can’t do that without getting that kind of artifact from polys occupying the same physical space. You can put one texture on one object and get the effects you want or put multiple textures on one object (using Mix Textures).

I tried adding the “fill” and “stroke” in the same material, but wasn’t getting the desired effect. How do I mix textures?

    Thanks,
    D.

it should be possible using the various channels and possibly the Layer shader in those channels – some of the apparent effect in the example image is coming from lighting as well though (assuming it’s not just photoshop) so you have to think about that as well. As time permits, I’ll try it as well…

    Thanks man, much appreciated.
    I’m slowly getting there:

This is two materials laid on top of each other on the same model.

    Best,
    D.
