  • Bizarre – Vegas 11 timeline omits frame 00:16:29

I just noticed some very bizarre behavior from the installation of Vegas 11 on my laptop (the installation on my desktop does not do this).

When you get to 00:16:28 on the timeline it just jumps straight to 00:17:00. There is no frame 00:16:29. Interestingly, if I disable quantize to frames and start advancing the cursor, 00:16:29 will show up on the time display but not the timeline itself. If I enable quantize to frames again, the cursor skips the frame just as it did before.

I noticed something was wrong when I rendered a video on my laptop that Vegas told me was exactly 2:38, and when I transferred the video to the desktop and opened it, Vegas told me it was 2:37:29….one frame shorter.

And like I said, the frame skipping doesn’t happen on my desktop; 00:16:29 shows up on the timeline as it’s supposed to. Has anyone seen this behavior before? Does my laptop have a bad installation?

What is your Time Ruler setting?

If I understand what the Time Ruler setting is, it’s set on “Time and Frames”.

That is actually correct. Think of it sort of like leap year when an extra day is added. In this case, a frame is dropped because it’s not 30fps, it’s 29.97fps. Therefore, every few minutes a frame is “dropped”.

The way SMPTE Drop Frame time code works is that the first two frames of every minute (00 and 01) are dropped, except every 10th minute.

I don’t think that’s what’s going on here. In this case it’s frame 29 that’s being dropped, and it only does it on one particular installation of Vegas (version 11, on my laptop)…Vegas Movie Studio doesn’t do that, and neither does Vegas 11 or 12 on my desktop.
