Bitrate vs. Compression
Does the term, ‘lowering the bitrate’ and the term ‘compression’, mean the same thing? Can you do one without the other or are these two terms merely extensions of one another?

They are both directly related. To fit on a DVD, you must COMPRESS the file. However, the question becomes… HOW MUCH will you compress the file? The bitrate determines that. The higher the bitrate, the bigger the file, the lower the compression. The lower the bitrate, the smaller the file, the higher the compression.

Do I understand that some applications encode via variable bitrate and other’s use a fixed predetermined bitrate based on video size? Can anyone tell me how Sony handles their ‘Fit-to-Disk’ application used within DVD Architect Studio 3.0…variable or fixed or other?

My understanding is that DVDA using single pass VBR (Variable BitRate). I could be wrong.
