Occasionally clients request video on CD. We have a client that wants 2 Windows Media videos on a CD along with some .PDFs. What is the optimal bitrate for video on CD? We tried a High Quality 720×480 setting in Sorenson that plays back well on most computers, but stutters on an older PC. Thanks, Kathie

    1x 150 1.2288
    2x 300 2.4576
    4x 600 4.9152
    8x 1200 9.8304
    10x 1500 12.2880
    12x 1800 14.7456
    20x 3000 24.5760
    32x 4800 39.3216
    36x 5400 44.2368
    40x 6000 49.1520
    48x 7200 58.9824
    50x 7500 61.4400
    52x 7800 63.8976

It may have been the frame size rather than the datarate that made the old PC stutter.

Obviously if you copy the files from the CD to the hard drive, datarate is not so much an issue.

Thanks for the reply. We have decided to go with lower bit rate (originally 4171 kbps to 1545 kbps for saftey. The larger file size worked well on most computers, but stuttered on a 9 year old computer.

Good call. 4000kbps is WAY high for most PC playback reliability. We stick to no more than 1700kbps and a 640 x 480 frame size is a more standard size for computer playback. Also deinterlace the fields so the decompressor doesn’t have to worry about that.

Thanks for sharing the specs you use for video on CD. We did do the de-interlace–although the client insisted on the larger 720 size–but it played back well on the 9-year old “test” computer. Thanks, Kathie
