Bitrate calculator
I used the bitrate calculator for the first time yesterday, quite handy. I was trying to preview a 2.5 hr video before doing a final render to check for errors. Didn’t want to waste a dual layer so I used the calculator to fit onto a 4.7. When I brought in into DVD Arch, it was too big to fit onto the disc, I only had the first menu and left the standard background up. So, I decided to try it in Nero to save some time and it fit fine in that program and did not to re-encode. What gives? What is the difference between the two (besides DVD Arch being a real authoring program…..this is odd…THANKS!

I’ve now never rely on DVDA to reveal the amount of space needed. It does tend to err on the conservative. When getting to the 4.7gb limit on any rendering I have put my trust in the set formulas that abound here abouts AND that BitRate calculator.
On the other hand, DVDA also has to know and accommodate for the memory needed for menus, structures, graphics and any further complexities that you maybe designing-in, and which, by definition, aren’t within the scope of a pure Bitrate calculator, which just looks at the raw media files. I’m certain that that’s what “gives”?

See it would not allow me to burn the DVD without re-compressing. I am a little new to the calculator, so any input is helpful. At a certain point DVDA will not allow you to burn a disc if the size is too large

Scott, I assume you’re referring to the bitrate calculator from https://www.johncline.com/bitcalc110.zip
If yes, I get the following numbers for a 2.5 hr. video.
CBR (not recommended): 3,712,000
VBR: 6,496,000 / 3,712,000 / 2,224,000
BTW, this assumes AC3 audio at the default rate in Vegas.
Due to the length of the video, I’d do this one as a 2-pass.
The numbers won’t change but the encoding will take longer.
