When binding a character rig to mesh, does the mesh have to be all one “shape” or can it be in separate pieces? Like if I constructed a torso shape and an arm shape would those two pieces have to be fused together in order for the mesh to bind to the rig? If all the shapes need to be bound in the same mesh whats the best way to do that?

    Thanks!

No, they don’t have to be connected. Each one just has to have a weight tag, and it has to be affected by the skin deformer (either by heirarchy or the deformer’s Include list).
