  • Bin organization in Vegas when working with Trimmer

Posted by Tim Neighbors on December 4, 2010 at 8:00 pm

I’ve notices what I believe to be a bug in Vegas since as long as I can remember in every version of vegas since they added video in version 3. But I’m wondering why I don’t see any other posts about it and if maybe there is a setting to disable this ‘feature’.

When I have multiple bins, if I drop a portion of the file onto the timeline, that file is automatically added to whichever bin is currently open in the Project Media window.

This makes it nearly impossible to stay organized. Any ideas how to stop this? Can somebody else try this and see if its just me?

    thanks!

The media stays where it was before, the Project media window, or Bin as you call it is just a list of files used in that project. The files are not moved from there original location, unless you save as, a select Copy media, then it copies to the new location, good for backing up projects.

What he means is when you drop media from the explorer onto the timeline, the media is added to whatever media bin you currently have selected.

I guess this is the intended behavior. If you don’t want this to happen, make sure that you have All Media selected BEFORE you start dropping media onto the timeline. Otherwise, Vegas assumes that you want it added to the currently selected media bin.

I’m sorry…I left out a key detail in my haste. Its when I drop a portion of a clip down from the trimmer that it adds that source clip to the current bin that is open.

Right… because that is the intended behavior… i.e., to add clips to the currently selected bin. As I said, just select All Media before you start dropping clips and you should be fine (unless you want to also add them to a bin in which case select the bin you want to add them to).

I really wish they would do away with that feature in that case. I can’t see how it could be helpful. If I want that media in the current folder, I’d put it there. I often right click on events and open their source in the trimmer, then drop segments back down to the timeline.

I try to stay on ‘all media’ but inevitably I forget to switch back to ‘all media’ and screw up my organization without knowing it.

Don’t tell us… tell Sony! 😉 I would definitely make a Product Suggestion.
