    Hi,
Just looking for some opinions or perhaps the ‘right’ answer:

I’m building an animation for a large LED billboard (20′ x 10′, 6272 x 2688 lines) and have been unable to obtain information on the proper size to build it at. I have the size ratio, but I’m wondering how large I should make it to ensure quality, clarity, etc. Any thoughts?

You need to consider how the animation is being played back:
    – Beta SP tape?
    – hard drive?

… because that may determine the size of the video that you have to render.

For instance, the pixel size and resolution of the NASDAQ marketsite billboard in Times Square is mostly irreleavant. Why? Because (last time I designed for it) the playback device is a Beta SP deck. So your final render has to be D1, 720×486. Now you design at a shape that fits the cylinder using a supplied template, then you squeeze it into a D1 comp and render.

As for hard drive playback, you need to make a video that won’t make the hard drive choke.

To restate: find out how the thing is being played back, and if there are any relevant specs.

Yes definitely get the playback specs from someone at the billboard company. Each LED manufacturer has their own specs & playback methods. Also check if there are any limitations on motion in the piece. If the billboard is on a highway, sometimes there are state, city or county regulations regarding that.
