  • Big reverse telecine problem – NTSC to 24p HD

Posted by Chris Gunningham on April 20, 2006 at 11:20 am

We are a UK studio working on a co-production with a US company. The series we are producing is to be shown in the US and the UK. We are having a debate about which framerate to use.

In order to future proof the production internationally 24fps would seem a logical choice for HD. The problem is with the live action footage. The show is unique as it incorporates 50% live action and 50% animation.

We don’t have access to the original negs to produce 24fps HD masters. So we are stuck with NTSC digbeta source tapes which have been telecined from 24p.

The only option we have is to reverse telecine the NTSC to 24p HD, which will integrate with our animated footage. From here we can convert to SD PAL and NTSC.

This looks favourite but can you see any problems with this method, in terms of quality? Do you know of any pitfalls with this method? and whether cinema tools is the best for doing this?

    Thanks

Well, you have some choices to make. You cut your footage in SD, and use the Kona 3 to do a rev telecine upon digitizing (this skips cinema tools). Or you can get all of footage transferred to HD and cut in HD. Terranex conversion from Sd to HD is top notch. It just depends on where in the workflow you want to use it. The Kona 3 will also do real time upconversion, but I’m not sure if it’ll do a rev telecine AND upconversion at the same time. You might have to call AJA on that one.

    Thanks,

I haven’t got the Kona 3 in yet (next week) so I didn’t realise it can do reverse telecine when digitizing. Even if the upnconvert is an extra stage that’s ok.. What i’m interested in is testing the quality of the footage compared to the original after rev telecine, upconvert then downconvert. If anyone has done this process and can advise please let me know.

    Thanks again
