Big Problem With P2 naming convention
So my local panasonic dealer just told me there is no solution to this, and I am hoping you experts can prove him wrong, because it seems like a HUGE flaw in the P2 workflow:
I just shot 8 cards of P2 footage, dumped them to my P2 store and imported them into FCP
Now i need to order them in the chronological sequence in which they were shot.
I was told this is not possible… are you kidding me>?
Please let me know if this can be done???

Could you just sort according to Time Code, that should get you there.

Well you would probably want to use P2CMS or HD Log Pro if that’s a major concern. Or refer to your script notes. You can also determine the chronological order of clips by examining them in the finder.

I have been examining them in the finder.. but I took 8 cards, so each card just resets itself in naming them, so it’s impossible to tell that way, unless I am missing something.
Sorting by timecode is nice in FCP, but sometimes I just want to use QT pro to sort clips, and this does not help…

Name your clips BEFORE you import them. Log and Transfer does this, P2CMS does this, P2 Log and HD Log does this…and the name is reflected in the Quicktime file.

Next time you can create a metadata file on SD card, provide a clip name (and a lot more if you wish) and have the camera name clips sequentially as you shoot.

Totally- if the clip metadata is something that is really important to you in terms of chronology you can be prepping the camera to set things up properly before you even go out to shoot. That’s why you want P2CMS or P2 Log.
