generalspecialist.com offers some good suggestions for over coming image buffer issues.

since you are on an intel mac running powerpc software (ae7 is not intel native) you may need to decrease the both the maximum memory usage setting from default 120% to maybe 60% and the maximum ram cache setting from 60% to around 30%. you can find these settings in preferences>memory & cache settings.

unfortunately running powerpc software restricts the amount of ram that you will be able to use when running those applications… other tips for running ae7 on an intel mac:

    1. never run other powerpc native applications at the same time.
    2. disable opengl for previews (preferences>previews, then uncheck the box for ‘use opengl’). opengl accelerated effect were very unstable and when that option was enabled ae would often crash when any of those effects were added.
    3. save often if you use any of the cycore effects (effects with ‘cc’ in front of the name) that were bundled with the ae7 pro version, they were unstable on the intel macs. if you purchased the cycore hd effects, it seems like there wasn’t a problem…

if you can upgrade to ae cs3 (ae8), then you will rarely see the image buffer problem and you will get full use of all your ram in after effects, along with multiprocessing and better stability.
