please someone help me. i had this bug for weeks and i really have to get rid of it NOW!!! i tried to output this after effects cs3 project in all kind of macs (leopard / tiger on intel / ppc)…. and it always does the same error…

even if in the timeline everything IS right, some video layers, sometimes, do not play when i preview or render. sometimes they all work fine, sometimes some videos keep their start position, sometimes some videos keep their end position and sometimes some videos do kind of… well… anything (one frame at their star position, and the next frame their end position for example). the problem can be for one or many layers. at first i thought my comp was too big. i created a pretty huge 3d environnement… but then i started a new project (with no 3d, pretty simple comp) and it started to do the same thing. how do i get rid of it? well, i quit and i reopen… sometimes it works, sometimes not. but, unfortunately, these days, it just doesnt work anymore. layers are freezed more than ever. i just can’t preview or render!!!! this is MAJOR! by the way, when the problem started, i didn’t do any update of any kind… and anyway, i just formatted my computer and it still does it… am i the only one who have this problem?

if you have any idea, PLEASE PLEASE let me know. thank you a lot…

    Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling?

If all else fails that usually fixes the matter.

What codec do these footage items use?

I hate to ask, but might this be a cracked copy of After Effects? I’m sure cracked programs are totally unreliable, and I’ve never heard of the problem you describe happening outside of compromised software.

If you’re using reference files for your source footage, try substituting them with the actual QuickTime files. Good luck!

So. You have the same problem with the same project on multiple computers?

    So it’s not one computer.
We need to remove/disable/hide things to see what’s causing the problem.
    Hide footage items.
    Disable effects.
Make sure footage items are not MPEG-2 or strange codecs like DivX.

Anyway, start hiding/disabling, make short render tests at low-res and get back to us.

I have the same problem on a so simple project ! I just add a mask on a quiktime import. When i open the project, the preview may be freezed or net, and the rendering freezed or not. If i close AE and reopen it, it may be different on the several composition…. I’ve never seen such a thing ! The rendering is in PhotoJpeg and i have unlocked the QT import, but no change …
