I love my Davinci Resolve. I was hung up on Final Cut Pro since it blasted onto the scene in April 1998 (around then???). Glad I made the leap 3 years ago. I have always been an artist creator butn lack the techny computer wisdom. Although I have been forced to. I shoot with the Sony FX-6 and use DaVinci 17. 4

I currently edit on an iMAC 2017. I have always been editing on MAC Pro desktop units but due to some cost issues I resorted to the IMac because at a NAB show some Black Magic Fusion experts did. Any way I want to go back to the Big Mac Pro Desktop but need direction on where to start. I will be shooting soon in 4K and because of some editing issues in 1080, ready to start looking for more power and not to worry. Thank you. Seeking advice.

    Sincerely,

    David

How much longer could you stretch out making this decision? We’re in this weird purgatory with the Apple transition to their M1 chips. All the Mac Pro desktop models are currently Intel, but I wouldn’t doubt we’d see some confirmation on where that’s going with the Apple Arm chip before the end of the year, though it’s possible it would be 2023 before you could actually obtain one.

If you want to stick with Intel, waiting until an M1 Mac Pro is announced might also benefit you from a pricing perspective.

Ah Hah! That is the issue. Thank you Gary for informing me of the situation. I will wait.

    Thank you again.

    David

And no need to buy the best either… lots of video on youtube before you decide which version is the best for you. The modest one with 32GB ram and 1or 2 Tb of storage would be fine for most people. Then all need is external SSD storage.

Very true. I quickly calculated to the top and you can spend easily 10 to 15K. I’ll take your advice. Thanks.

Right now you will probably be fine with a base model Studio Max.

It is just a shame you can’t upgrade later, but you never know what OWC magic might happen.

Anything above the base model you are just over-paying mac tax in bucket loads.

FCP and Resolve are optimised for the M1 and always recommend transcoding to Pro Res anyway

Personally I am mostly After Effects and need RAM so won’t be jumping back Mac wards anytime soon. 128GB is actually NOT a lot of RAM these days and you can only get that with the Ultra. 64GB is fine for editing, but not for compositing and 3d really.

I also like to pick my processor and GPU , and run a decklink at proper throughput and dante card and nvme raid so prefer threadripper Pro, which, for the same money as the basic level Studio suits me better, but only just, and only because after 2013 I will never trust my business to Infinite Loopagain.

But that isn’t to say the Studio isn’t fast and does what it does well.

We all have different experiences with Apple computers as well as (list the many PC options here) Windows.

So I can easily say after (insert the top three PC options here) dealing with a myriad of Windows boxes, I can honestly say I will never trust (insert….blah blah) again.

But I know that most of the top options I salivate for Maya use 🙂

So many options so many stories.

Thank you Tristan for the advice. Very helpful. I edit in Resolve and am simply concerned

with how my MAC acts editing with my FX-6 footage and 4K.

    Sincerely,

    David
