beware the beep — it’s (probably) all good…
i had a scare with my new octo-core (not the latest & greatest, but it’s been in service less than 90 days) when i came in from the weekend. i ended-up getting the “blue screen of death” when i turned my machine on.
after going through many levels at applecare, it became apparent that a visit from a tech was in order. one thing that was consistent since the problem arose was there had been two-beeps where previously there had only been one. from what the guy at applecare told me, that means it’s a RAM issue.
it was first believed to be the 3rd party RAM (that had been working no problem prior to the blue screen of death). then it turned out that wasn’t the case. the tech removed the RAID card and the machine worked fine… no beeps.
so i called the company that sold me my RAID system and, though they were shocked to hear there was an issue with the card, they immediately sent-out a replacement no questions asked (thank you to the guys at Maxx Digital).
i was beginning to think life should be fine at this point; however, i get a late phone call from the tech telling me it’s not the RAID card after all, but either the logic board and/or the power supply… at this point i’m a bit nervous & now 3 days behind on projects.
on day three with the apple tech, he replaces the logic board and the power supply. then he puts the 3rd party RAM & the ORIGINAL RAID card into the machine and viola! ONE BEEP and we’re back & running. PHEW!
so the moral to the story is, count your beeps when you build a new system (my RAID has 1 beep, yours may have none or more than one), have good vendors, thank you to apple care & maxx digital (who is getting their replacement raid card back).
