Beware the 2GB limit writing to an afp network
We just had this crop up again so I thought I’d pass it along to anyone else using a NAS Shared Storage system like our Small Tree system.
You cannot render or export a file larger than 2GB from Adobe software to an afp NAS. Premiere Pro, After Effects, etc… You have to render to a local drive first, then push it across the network.
We were trying to export a flattened QT for Resolve this morning and it kept failing until I remembered the limit. Finished file will be around 35GB so we’re writing to the Desktop and then will push it across the network. All our other software (FCP, Resolve, Episode, Compressor, Avid) will write the large files no problem directly to the NAS, but Adobe won’t.
There’s a blog post on adobe.com detailing the limitation. Just wanted to pass it along, especially to the folks switching from FCP that never had to deal with this limitation.

A work around is to export to the desktop and then use the Finder to copy to the SAN. This has bit me a lot of times. Walter, have you tried Thursby DAVE?

That’s the precise workaround we’re using here. Render to Desktop, send to sAN.

It’s a well known problem with Apple’s 64bit QT APIs, a bug out there for years and unfixed. You may even run into this when mounting your shares via Samba. Adobe is not the only one with that problem. Any app that uses those APIs runs into the same problem. Media Express from BMD has the same issue. If an when Aja or Smoke step up and use those APIs (or have to use those APIs) your SAN will essentially become unusable for Mac Clients.
Solution: Render out to something non-QT. Mount your volumes vis NFS or go iSCSI. Your San uses Open-E, it should be able to provide NFS shares. Or use your Dell Workstation and Premiere. QT under Windows seems to be all-32bit so you’re ok.——

This has been fixed in updates to Premiere Pro and Adobe Media Encoder and in the next version of After Effects:

Apple’s AV Foundation has completely fixed this problem. The issue was Apple 32bit QT calls. I’ve used a few apps now that are built around the AV Foundation and the 2 Gig limitation to writing to SAN is gone, fixed, finito! Write as big a file as you want.
