beware 10.3.9, firewire problems
Posted by Mike Hennessey on May 12, 2005 at 7:38 pm10.3.9 is buggy. It looks like the update messes up how the computer communicates with the firewire devices. For example. If I boot up with the DVcam deck turned on the computer wont see my firewire drives. If I turn off the deck the drives show up like magic. If I then turn the deck back on the computer freezes up.
Most of the posts I have seen have suggested either going directly to Tiger or going back to 10.3.3 then running the 10.3.8 updater. I am going to be going back to 10.3.6 because I know that 10.3.6 worked.
Apple will probably help you if you have a service plan. They told me I could buy one for $49. Isn’t that nice of them considering that they caused the !@#$%^&* problem in the first place!

May 12, 2005 at 8:02 pmI’ve had no problems at all since upgrading to 10.3.9. I’ve captured video & laid off to tape with no problems whatsoever. Perhaps there’s something more specific to your troubles. Did you repair permissions after you upgraded? Are you daisy chaining your drives & deck together? What kind of drive enclosures?

May 12, 2005 at 8:12 pmI haven`t run into any problems after the update. I’ve captured and recorded to tape with no prob. Some time ago after the update FCP won`t let me preview my secuences but it’s ok now after I deleted the user prefs. so i don`t know if it has something to do with the 10.3.9 update.

May 12, 2005 at 9:28 pmSame here… no issues since updating. Considering this G5 boots off of a FW 800 drive, I’d see the problem if I had it…

May 12, 2005 at 11:51 pmWe have having intermittent problems with one dual 2.5. If the DSR-20 is turned off, FCP will not refresh the device properly. FCP sees the device again, but the video only plays a few frames per second. After this happens, the only fix is to restart FCP.
We have numerous edit stations (10+) running 10.3.9 without issue, but this one dual G5 is having issues with FW devices.

May 13, 2005 at 1:38 amFW 800 has become flakey, both built-in and expansion card on G5 2×2 after 10.3.9. Can lose comms intermitently. This is running FW400 devices from the FW800 ports (don’t have any 800 devices at present). FW400 ports are working fine.

Checked your cables? What happens if you start swapping cables, drives & inputs? Do the same dirves act up? Same cables? Same ports on the drives? Enquiring minds want to know…

May 13, 2005 at 11:41 amThis is across a range of cables and devices. It doesn’t affect my workflow and I’m not in the testing business, just passing on what I believe to be a potential problem and re-inforcing the experiences of the original poster.

May 13, 2005 at 7:29 pmI’m running a G4 with 2 Lacie firewire dirves, a Canopus advc-100, and a DSR-45. All of them go through a firewire hub. For trouble shooting I have tried every hardware sequence I can think of. I even tried it with a single drive plugged into one port on my Mac and the DSR-45 in the other and I get the same thing.
I could very well be wrong, but my system worked fine before 10.3.9. I’m not the IT guy (we don’t have one), but if you do a search on the cow for 10.3.9 you will see a ton of folks with similar problems. Now that I’m thinking about it is their anyone on a G4 that has been ok on 10.3.9?
I have not deleted the user preferences, I’ll try it. Is that a Mac thing or a FCP thing? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

May 13, 2005 at 10:57 pmHave you tried to zapping your PRAM? Occasionally the PRAM can become corrupt and cause problems with your computer. If you are experiencing problems that have resisted other attempts at troubleshooting, you can sometimes solve them by zapping the PRAM. You can do this by holding down the Cmd (?), Option, p , and r keys while starting up or restarting your computer. This will automatically restart your computer a few seconds after it powers on. Keep holding the Cmd, Option, p , and r keys and allow your computer to restart seven times. Then let it power up and boot normally. You may need to go in and change some of your settings, as they will be reset to factory defaults.
