Bevel Transparency Question
Hello,
I had a question regarding how the Layer Style ‘Bevel and Emboss’ works and how it spans over multiple compositions. As you can see in ‘AE Picture 1’ below, I just have normal text with no effects sitting on top of a background particle video. That text layer is in its own composition, and that composition is sitting inside the composition in the picture called “MAIN COMP – I SEE THE LIGHT”. I then used the Screen mode to combine the layers of the “MAIN COMP – I SEE THE LIGHT” composition, with the background particle video.In ‘AE Picture 2’, it’s the same photo, but the text composition (which is nested inside the “MAIN COMP – I SEE THE LIGHT” composition) has a Bevel effect applied to it. However, there’s a bit of transparency to it as you can see. Is there a reason why it would be slightly transparent? Is it something to do with the multiple compositions not compositing the bevel correctly?
I would assume the text should look like ‘AE Picture 3’ (where there’s no transparency, it’s just bold and defined), but it’s not. Anyone have any knowledge on this? Thanks all!

Hi there, it’s hard to see from the images of your After Effects interface exactly what’s going on, but from what you are describing, the problem sounds like you are using the Screen Mode which increases the transparency of pixels depending how dark they are. With the Bevel Alpha Effect, what you are describing is what I would expect. However with the Bevel Alpha Layer Style, that shouldn’t take the layers blending mode into consideration. Therefore you will need to check the Layer style settings ‘Highlight Mode’ and ‘Shadow Mode.’
If that’s not fixing it then it could be to do with the fact that you seem to be using a much older version of After Effects.Be interested to find out either way!

Here’s how the compositions are set up (AE Picture 4). You can see how the Bevel Layer Style is on the “Type” composition (and within that composition lives the original text).

I would have put the particle background video within this composition, but because of that adjustment Glow layer I have in there, it would effect it, and to my knowledge there’s no way to stop an adjustment layer from effecting a particular layer underneath it.
But you’re saying just play around with the Highlight and Shadow Mode? I’ve been trying it and have had no luck so far…here’s how the default settings come in; what would you change it to?

Thanks for the reply John! I actually ended up realizing after some other posts that because the nature of the Screen Mode taking away blacks, that was causing the slight transparency. I ended up using the UnMult effect and adjusting the Alpha to fix (or help) the issue
