Better Way to do motion blur
Posted by Joseph Armstrong on January 3, 2011 at 8:06 pmDoes anyone know of a way to achieve REAL motion blur inexpensively with FCP 5? I do not have After Effects, but I do have Motion. RE: Reelsmart motion blur have already been suggested but I want to see if there is something I could use instead. Are there any techniques or free plug-ins that anyone knows of?
Thanks,

Are you looking for a motion-blur transition?

I’ve never heard of any other solution than ReVision (shocking good), however with your FC version you have not even this option.

January 3, 2011 at 11:19 pmI am looking for a plugin or technique that would enable me to apply motion blur to subjects in stopmotion animation clips. However a motion blur transition does sound useful. I suppose I could test it to see if I can achieve anything worthwhile.

January 4, 2011 at 1:06 amMy apologies, I forgot to mention that I have also have FCE 4 installed on my machine. I plan to edit the video in FCP 5 then do the motion blur processing in FCE, that is, if it comes down to using Reelsmart. However the FCP 5’s incompatibility is also part of why I wanted to find another technique so that I could keep things simpler. Thanks for your response.

January 4, 2011 at 2:28 amYou may want to just try going into the Motion Tab of a clip and enabling the Motion Blur function. Set the samples to 16 or 32 and run the percent blur down a bit lower than the default. Play with the settings until you get the desired effect. The higher the samples number, the longer it will take to render, but with a bit of tweaking, it can look fairly good and it’s free. It’s one of those features that I hardly every see anyone taking advantage of.

Right.
For animated objects, this Movement Blur works.
You mentioned you have MOTION too. In MOTION 4 (Image Units), there is a Motion Blur efect, but I don’t know on your version.
What I do not understand is why you go from FC to FCE. All the export quality options of FC will be lost on FCE.
