  • Better quality at 1080 or 720p?

Posted by Piff Aroni on December 23, 2009 at 2:29 am

I have a canon hf10, which records in 1920 x 1080. Most of my work will be placed on SD DVD, youtube, and the web. My question is with the workflow and the final quality.

would I get better quality if I recored at 1920 x 1080 and then IMPORTED the footage into final cut AT FULL HD QUALITY (1080) and edit in FCP at 1080 and then EXPORT to a 720p (via compressor) setting for youtube OR would I get better quality in changing the SEQUENCE PRESET to a 720p setting in FCP and work with it as 720?

    Hi Piff,
FC can do a nice downscaling.
Set “Render in High Precision” and “Render Motion Effects: BEST”.

Edit in HD an then downrez to SD. This gives you a master in HD for later use, plus, it looks so much better to show a client your project in HD.
