  • Better Broadcast safe filter?

Hi there, after many years of working with an onboard legaliser (Avid Meridian Symphony – spoilt I know!) which allowed the user to focus on getting the correct look/balance and not having to worry about the scopes, I’m a little disappointed with the FCP broadcast safe filter. I feel like I’ve gone back to a linear setup and having to check every shot for levels… and sometimes making unsatisfactory tweaks just to prevent RGB gammut errors. This is a real step backwards in my opinion, not to mention time consuming.
With my winge out of the way, apart from purchasing an external legaliser (with soft clipping), are there any plugins/filters that do a better job of clamping chroma/legalizing than the FCP broadcast safe. Most of the time our pics are legal or very close, but the seeming lack of chroma/gammut control is frustrating and often require a hefty dose of desaturation in CC which ruins the intended grade.

P.S Working in the Pal world and finishing to high QC requirements.

It’s called Color and is included with Studio 2. It doesn’t have a “broadcast safe filter,” you just set your Ceiling and Floor, then go ahead and grade. Color always clamps you off at your settings.

It has worked for me for over 2 1/2 years with no legal issues at all from Quality Control checks at broadcasters.

As I just said in another post about the broadcast limiter, I prefer the RGB limiter which actually stays legal after render. Don’t know why the broadcast safe doesn’t but it is best avoided in critical QC environments.

Thanks Michael, thanks Walter. I have been warned off using Color due to a large number of bugs in our version, which should be fixed in two weeks when our technicians install the latest versions of FCP and Color. I will in the meantime give the “RGB Limiter” filter a go.
    Cheers

[Si Ryan] “I have been warned off using Color due to a large number of bugs in our version,”

What bugs are you worried about? Some things that people think are bugs are actually limitations in the Color workflow. Also note that we have a Color forum where we can carry this discussion further if you’d like.

And of course you can pick up my DVD on Color to help you learn the application.
