I’m trying to convert an .mp4 file to a quicktime format that can be read by everyone, including those with Macs running OS9. What is the best conversion method out there? Any freeware available? Thanks.

You don’t say what platform you’re on.

What type of .mp4 is it? If it is MPEG-4 Part 2, then that is compatible with QT 6 and OS 9. If it is H264 based, then you would need QT 7 for play back and need to convert. The codec I would recommend in that case is Sorenson Video 3. It is backwards compatible to QT 5.

    Sorry,
I’m running a 2.5Ghz dual Mac with 6.5gigs of memory. Not sure which type of .mp4 it is but I belive it was based on using H264. Thanks.

FFMpegx: it’s shareware and will do QT6 compatible files.

Compressor will too. Sorenson 3 is good. If you can get Sorenson 3 Pro, the files will look best.
