So we used to have a play only Sony BetaSP deck. We recently bought a used deck (we sent it to get professionally fixed and make sure the setting are correct). I’ve had some crazy occurrence happen with it though, and I’m not sure if it’s the deck (which it shouldn’t be) or the connection.

I’m connected via Component and Analog in and out to the deck. I also have my SDI going to our DSR-1800. I have deck control, I can black and code (using FCP), I can capture, I can even Edit To Tape, and get fine results. BUT, if I just open edit to tape or log and capture in FCP, there are weird tracking lines all over the screen and a strange noise coming from the speakers. Almost like there’s a crossed signal or it’s over amplified or something. If I hit play on a tape that’s got footage on it, it plays fine, I get normal audio. When I edit to tape, I usually get like one line that looks like the tracking is off on my monitor that’s hooked up to the TC Out on the deck. Once I finish the lay back to tape, I’ll check the tape and the footage looks terrific, and audio sounds fine as well. If I un-hook the AJA, and view a tape, everything is fine.

    I’m stumped. Any ideas?

Oh yeah the deck is a Sony PVW-2800.

REPLY – I am guessing here, but it sounds lke you have the audio and video from the PVW2800 hooked up directly to the audio and video of the AJA I/O – no mixer, no patch bay. When you open up Log and Capture, and you are not playing the tape, you have created a FEEDBACK LOOP – in to out, and out to in – this happens to every system that is hoooked up this way. IF you disconnect the audio input of the VTR, the strange noise will disappear. If you simply lower the RECORD LEVELS of your PVW2800, this problem will disappear. If you had a mixer in line, you would raise and lower faders accordingly, but you probably don’t have a mixer in line.

For the video, make sure that you have BLACK going into the Ref Video input of your PVW-2800, and the Reference IN of your AJA I/O and make sure that you have a 75 ohm BNC terminator on your AJA I/O Ref IN loop. Monitor the output of your AJA I/O, and you will be fine.

Thanks for the reply! I do have a Behringer UB1204-Pro mixer. Would that work for the audio?

Thanks so much! You were right. Of course, I find the Io installation guide after I ask the question. Sorry to waste your time like that, but I was desperate.

    Cheers,

You can always take your deck out of ee mode as well.
