Betacam vs. BetaSP question
not sure if this is the best forum for this question, but i just “inherited” a box full of unused Betacam (non-SP) tapes and just wondered if they would be okay to use in my BetaSP camcorder and to play back on my 1800. i realize that SP is better, but was maybe going to use these tapes for some non-critical shooting. by the way, what are the specs on Beta vs. SP?

Sony UVW-1800 will PLAY BetaCam tapes (but not very well).
The 1800 will NOT RECORD on them (the record will “lock-out”).
It is one of the few decks Sony made(s) that was not “backward compatible” with non-SP tapes.
I don’t think you’ll find much use for the non-SP tapes.

The only decks which allow betacam and betacam sp recording are the bvw series.
The pvw and uvw studio vtr’s do not allow for recording on betacam tapes.As far as camcorders you need to also use the bvw series vtr’s which allow betacam or betacam sp recording such as the Sony D600 or Ikegami V55 or V59 or Sony BVV-5 dockable vtr. PVW or UVW series camcorders do not allow for using betacam oxide tapes for recording.
