September 9, 2008 at 8:17 pmFollowing those steps, I got black going out to the Beta. I did however, get b&w bars going straight into the TV, so at least the signal is going out. I tried laying off to tape anyway and still got nothing but black.

you have just proved that you have an issue with your Beta VTR. If you got “B+W” bars from feeding the Kona directly into the TV, this proves that the Kona is working. To go one step further (this will prove if your Beta VTR has an issue) – go back to the ANALOG OUT tab in the Control Panel, and change it from Component to COMPOSITE. Now, that “Y Out” jack will be a composite video output. If you put this into your TV, you will see color on the color bars.
Take this Y out from the Kona K3 box, and put it into the VIDEO INPUT of your Beta VTR. Switch the input selector on your UVW1800 to COMPOSITE VIDEO IN, instead of Y Pb Pr. Take a BNC cable and go from the output of the Beta VTR (like video out 1) right into the TV monitor. Make sure that there is no tape in the Beta VTR, you are in local, and hit the RED record button on the Beta VTR. do you see a picture on your TV ? If you don’t, your Beta machine has a problem.
Remember, if you take this cable that is going into the Beta VTR video in (the one that is coming from the “Y” out of the K3 box), and stick it into your TV monitor, you should see a FULL COLOR color bar signal right now (as long as your Control Panel analog out setting is set for COMPOSITE, and not component). This will prove once again that your Kona is working.

September 9, 2008 at 9:00 pmThat definitely got it closer! I was able to see the color bars on the monitor, in addition to the BETA deck itself. The NO REF! error is also no longer on the deck. I tried laying off to the tape and still got black, but it definitely appears that the deck is okay since it received the color bars. Any other thoughts?

September 9, 2008 at 9:30 pmput color bars (composite) back into the Beta VTR Video input, and put the input selector to Composite Video. Pop in a tape and hit RECORD AND PLAY. Then play back the tape on a tv monitor. If you get black, your VTR head is dead.

September 12, 2008 at 4:24 am[Bob Zelin] “A Horita BSG-50 has 6 black outputs, and is on EBay RIGHT NOW (but is now) for $175.”
Thanks for the tip, Bob. I just bought it!

November 29, 2016 at 8:55 amHi Bob,
My name is Chris, I am working on FCP 7 and have been having problems with my Sony VTR machine. At first I had a 9300 message displayed on it, then it was NR OFF and now I have an error message displaying No REF! I am trying to print to video but I can’t seem to connect to the VTR even though the print to video window displays VTR OK.
Can you please help me,
Thanks,
Chris

November 29, 2016 at 7:22 pmthis post is from 2008 ! Who records back to a Beta VTR in 2016 ?
Your AJA Kona Card and Beta UVW 1800 must have a black reference signal from a product like an AJA GEN10
connected to the EXT REF input of the Kona (and select EXT REF in the Kona Control Panel) – and put the same black signal into both the REF IN, and Composite Video IN of the Beta 1800. I assume you are using the Y Pb Pr output of the Kona card to go into the input of the Beta 1800 VTR.Once you do this, you will no longer receive an error message on the VTR.
