Will one Mac internal 7200 rpm, 32MB cache SATA drive be sufficient to capture/playback Beta SP 8-bit video? Or do I need to stripe together 2 or 3 of these drives? thanks.

one will absolutely work (so will a FW800 drive), but for RELIABLE playback of an actual show, you should use at least 2 stripped together RAID 0. So, will just one work – yes.
Would I do this, if I make my living this way – no.

    thank you once again, bob.
and what’s the difference b/t raid 1, raid 5, and raid 0+1 in terms of data protection?

I am not going to answer your questions.
You cant’ get RAID 5 with only 2 drives, and you need
a controller card and a RAID 5 host controller (all more money) to get RAID 5. Forget RAID 0+1 and forget Raid 1.
You don’t want to mirror – it’s 50% slower, and 50% less storage, so forget it. Either go RAID 0, or spend A LOT more money and go RAID 5 (which you need to buy MORE STUFF to make this happen).
