I’m editing a :30 spot. Since renting an uncompressed FCP suite for the entire edit is not in the budget, I was planning on renting a suite for the capture and output only in order to obtain the best quality. I plan on capturing the source footage from Beta SP using a Cinewave I/O set-up (using the cine YUV 8-bit codec) directly to a firewire drive. Then moving the edit over to my Dual 2.3GHz G5. I could then download the Cinewave codec to the G5 in order to work with the footage in an uncompressed timeline and then after the edit was completed rent the Cinewave suite agian and print my master back to Beta SP for air. Is there a more efficent workflow and should I expect adequet performance from the G5 while editing on my system? The show has very little graphic elements and is pretty straight forward (very little effects, transitions, filters, etc..)

Why cinewave? For the cost of renting that suite for two days, why don’t you buy yourself an AJA ioLA and rent a beta sp deck for cheap? Your firewire drive, is it fw800? If not, you will have some trouble capturing and editing 8 bit material. Consider the DV50 codec if working on a fw400 drive. DV50 is a pretty solid 4:2:2 codec and the file size/bandwidth is kept to a minimum. If you decide to get the aja ioLA (analog version) then you have to get a firewire PCI card to keep the firewire busses separate using the built in firewire for the io and the PCI card for your fw drive. The PCI card should be no more than $40 US.

the cinewave route seems a little overkill, unless you had a similar cinewave setup at your digs.

Thanks for the feedback. The Cinewave rental is only an option since I’m getting a discounted rate on the suite. An upgrade to a AJA IO is a possibility in the future, but I think it would still be more expensive than the rate I’m getting on the suite. Thanks.
