I am trying to work in a sequence that will allow for the best quality with as much realtime EFX as possible. I feel that DV50 is fairly close to Digibeta and would be appropriate for most of the project that I am now working on. I have the Dual Quad 2.5 w/ 4.5GB Ram and an 8 drive 2TB SATA RAID and a 7800 GFX card. FCP 5.0.3. I am running Safe RT with Dynamic Playback Video Quality & Frame Rate.

I have an AJA IO LA hooked up to a Betacam 2800. I see that there is a DV50 capture setting, but that will only allow capture via firewire. It seems that the 8/10 bit uncompressed family is the only option to capture. Is that correct? If so what would be the best sequence (no render) to work in uncompressed or DV 50?

Jim have you loaded the most current drivers for the Io? you should have at least 4 settings for capture to DV50 ( Beta, (s) Video , composite, and SMPTE) if you are looking at the easy set up splash screen – do you have the show all box check to see all of the settings that say “AJAIo NTSC”
DV 50 is a great way to do your editing without rendering.

I am using ver 2.1. I do have show all checked and I see Beta YUV, Composite, S etc, but they are all 8 bit and 10 bit uncompressed. There is a DV 50 codec, but it is only for firewire capture not component. I opened up 4.5 on my laptop (which had an earlier driver for the AJA IO LA) and there several Betacam to DV50 codecs, but not on the Dual Quad FCP 5.0.3 w/ AJA 2.1.

    Any thoughts?

I found the problem (operator error) in ver 2.1 there seem to be optional codecs (specifically DV50) that need to be added manually. It does say that in the release notes, but I didn’t notice it until I did a search and found the IO additional easy set ups folder which included the DV50 support, and backtracked to the manual install info.
