Best workflow for creating D, M & E audio stems?
I’m working on a broadcast television special and need to create dialog, music and effects audio stems. What is the best workflow for doing this? Should I bring the project into Soundtrack Pro so I don’t end up with a ton of layers in Final Cut 5? Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

How many layers are we talking about here? By force of habit I work with eight.
A1 & A2 – SOT (Sound on tape) and Narration
A3 thru A6 – Sound effects
A7 & A8 – Music.So when you output, you set up the output so that Ch 1 gets A1 and A2, and Ch2 gets A3 thru A8. Plus, it is a good idea to have designated tracks for certain types of audio, so that things are willy nilly all over the place.

Thanks for the info. I have pretty much the same setup with my tracks. Sometimes I wish there was a way to label tracks.
How do you handle your final mix? I’ve been playing around in Soundtrack Pro and sending all my SFX tracks to one bus and the music to another. Then outputting everything as seperate tracks and importing them back into Final Cut.
Is it possible to do a 4 channel output? Stereo mix on channels 1 & 2, and music & sound effects only on 3 & 4?
