Best workflow for 3D MTS files to MXF
I have a 3D project I am porting from a Windows based NLE to Avid MC 8 on Mac. I’m unsure as to the best way to get my camera original MTS L/R files organized in stereo format using MetaFuze.
It seems that I need to transcode the MTS to another format before MetaFuze can recognize them, and that implies a secondary transcode from intermediary codec that to Avid DNX codec – unless I am missing a step. It seems that I have to get the files tagged as stereoscopic using MetaFuze, however perhaps I don’t need this step and can import directly into MC and then tag them as stereoscopic. In any event, MetaFuze isn’t recognizing MTS files and if I can convert them using MC 8, how do I tag them like MetaFuze does as stereoscopic?
Hence my question – what would be the best way to do this?

MC6 introduced a robust stereo 3D workflow directly in Media Composer removing the need for using MetaFuze to prep the material. Metafuze was the solution in v5 where there was a pseudo 3D editing solution and material needed to be prepped outside the application.
In v6 and later you can choose to work full left full right, side by side, over/under, etc. I would read up on how to work in S3D in the User Manual. I would recommend transcoding full left and right via AMA link to DNxHD of your choice, then use those assets to create S3D clips directly in MC. From there you can set viewers to see 3D in a variety of methods.

Thanks Michael, I didn’t see that documentation anywhere but it’s great info. What level of DNxHD would you recommend for 8-bit MTS files to transcode to? I won’t be going back to the MTS files again for color or final output.

There is a whole 3D guide in the docs section of the online library that gets installed. See my screenshot for where it is on OS X – I suspect a similar place on PC in the Avid Media Composer folder.
As far as quality, if you are not going back to camera originals, what is your final output destined for? Streaming, broadcast, theatrical? I am assuming these are 1920 x 1080 or are they higher resolution? Streaming I would suggest 115, if broadcast then 175.

Yes, I found that PDF and will use it now.
As far as output goes, at least broadcast but the footage has been large screen projected and it looks very good so I’m not ruling out theatrical at this stage. Perhaps 220 or better would be the way to go. Uncompressed is way too data intensive of course.

175 is the 24fps data rate of the 220 data rate family.
