  • Best WMV encoding for streaming to dial-up users?

Posted by Julian Gil on December 11, 2007 at 10:37 pm

I have Vegas Pro 8 and need to stream files using WMV codec that are normally around 4-5min in length and I am trying to figure out which type of template would work the best for someone using a dial-up connection.

    -Thanks

File – Render As – pick WMV as the format.

There you will find many presets. Try the 512 preset and see what you think of the size/quality. Then try the one above and below it comparing size/quality. Pick the compromise you like best.

Yeah thanks. That’s what I did. I like the 512 it looks good and it’s not a huge file. I was mainly wondering if that would be able to be seen on a dial-up connection or if I should go one step lower?

Most anyone on dialup is going to hate you for uploading a 512kpbs stream.
At best of best, they’re doing 100K over dialup, and that’s with managed service. The predominant surveys from Streaming Media show that the average dialup is around 40Kpbs.
Edit/create your stream accordingly. Merely re-encoding a higher-bitrate stream for a lower bitrate stream is rarely enough. It takes additional time and editing to create a quality low-bitrate stream.

Is there somewhere you could point me to so that I can do my own research on how to make a quality low bitrate stream?

As a side note: PLEASE allow a right-click, save to hard drive option. For dial-up this is very important. Whenever I need to look at a file, I find it much better to download it first and THEN watch it. That way it will run smoothly all the way through – even if I can’t maintain the bitrate used by the file.

Use a tiny frame size and you should be alright at 100kbps.
180×120 or even 90×60 pixels – I know, it’s small, but it won’t look like crap – up the sound quality to 64 so
