best way to sync sound and picture in FCP
Hi All,
I am shooting a personal documentary on 16mm, and it’s my first time shooting film. I shot my first reels recently, had the dailies transferred to DVCAM. I recorded sound onto a flash card that records WAV files. I shot on an early Aaton with no time code, so I slated every scene, planning to snyc sound and picture manually in FCP.
What’s the best, most efficient way to sync sound and picture in FCP? I’ve been told that in Avid, you can create new clips once you match sound to picture, permanently linking video and audio files. How bout in FCP? I want to find a way to sync the footage BEFORE logging, so I can then have a single log, some of which will be a log of my footage with synced picture and sound, some of just wild sound.

Using the slate, it’s really easy to just sync up the video using the audio waveform.
To marry audio to a clip, set an in point on both clips where slate sounds, select both the audio and the clip in the browser, select modify – merge clips. Use the merge using in point. That will sync both clips at the in point of each clip.
It would probably be easier to deal with all of the clips if each of the takes was a separate file. If you have the telecine flex file from the film transfer, that can be a great way of digitizing the video clips.

Many thanks for your advice. I’m such a newbie I wasn’t even aware of “flex files,” but you’ve given me plenty of food for thought and somewhere to start. Thanks for your help.

With the dramatic decrease of film aquisition for small projects, it’s not a very common topic anymore. I wouldn’t consider you a newbie because you haven’t used flex files before. Just be sure to request them from your telecine session.
