I will be editing and finishing (visual effects and color correction) a 60 min documentary for an independent project. Since the producer also have Premier CS6 and wants the flexibility to make changes at any time during the process, I need to find the best way to share projects as it gets updated.

Right now, we each have our own external disk with all the media and we simply email each other (we’re not in the same city) the CS6 session as it gets updated. At this point there’s no more media to be added, we’re simply tightening up the edits. The problem with this system is that as he saves a new version on his system, the path for all the media gets change for the simple reason that his computer’s name, external hard disk name etc….is different than mine, so i have to relink each time and the same goes for him when he receives my updated.

Is there a way around this ???

The workflow of this project seems quite odd to me. Generally, the editor does the editing, and the producer makes the editing decisions. The project would be much more manageable if the producer sent you notes or comments on where the changes needed to be made (timecode, comments, etc.), and not try to be an editor. It’s quite confusing, and opens the project up to problems if there are changes along the way that don’t come through, or media problems due to differing media paths. This is a recipe for disaster in my opinion.
Yes, there are Producer/Editors, but generally not two editors.

Relinking the first clip should find them all.

To avoid the relink window entirely, you should rename your external drives and reconfigure paths as necessary so they match exactly.

Relinking is greatly improved in CC.

[Walter Soyka] “Relinking the first clip should find them all.”

This is what i thought too, as this is how i worked back in the days with FCP7 and i manage to share projects easily with producers. When i or he receive the update we simply reconnect to one clip and everything shows up. But this does not seem to work with CS6 or CC. It will find some but not all. Can this be because the Media folder has many subfolders ???

I know this is probably the easiest solution but i thought there is some media management vudu in CS6 i’m not aware of

I tried with both CS6 and CC and don’T see any difference, can you be more specific…in what way has CC improved relinking ?

On a side note. When i open the same project in CC referencing to exactly the same media, the playback is sometimes distorted (big green blocks or ugly artifacts). The same session plays fine in CS6. I tried deleting all preview cache and still the same problem. any idea why ???

I’m using a MBP 2012, 16 MB ram, internal SSD, media is on a Peragus4 thunderbolt and AJA IO XT to a broadcast monitor. Thx

Are you and the producer both on Macs?

It should find them all, if the folder structure is the same.

It may also help to have the project file located such that the relative path to the media is the same on both systems. For example:

    –PROJECT
    —-ProjectFile.prproj
    —-MEDIA
    ——Footage 1
    ——Footage 2
    ——etc.

[Anhtu Vu] “I know this is probably the easiest solution but i thought there is some media management vudu in CS6 i’m not aware of”

Do it at the Finder/Explorer level. Make one system’s file structure match the other’s perfectly.

The re-linking window is actually usable now. CS6 asks for the location of the first offline file referenced in the project, then proceeds in order. CC shows the user a list of offline files and it lets you pick what files to reconnect and in what order. It also shows you information about the original path that may be an invaluable clue with DSLR footage with common names.

Nope, sorry. Does it make a difference if you turn on or off GPU acceleration?

One way to minimize it could be to do a “Project Manage” collect on ech machine…

that what all the media ends up in one folder….

then on either machine, connect the first clip and it will find others….BUT….

    this only works if

    1) you have the space to do it
    2) you each remember to add add any new files into the unified collect folder
