best way to select L/R channels on audio track?
Posted by Gilles Gagnon on August 27, 2010 at 8:22 pmHi Everyone.
I have an audio track of a video of a conversation with 2 people. one was mic’d on channel 1 (left), the other on Channel 2 (right). The audio track is a stereo track.
When editing, how can I easily go back and forth, selecting the channel corresponding to each person in order to get the clearest final result? (I’m looking for something along the lines of a “multicam edit” for an audio track)

August 27, 2010 at 8:33 pmDuplicate the audio track, right-click on each one and go Channels – Left (or Right) only so that each person is now on their own track.
It’s up to you what you do next.
One suggestion is to split both tracks when each person stops talking and then delete the silent portion of each speaker but that might be more trouble than it’s worth, especially if they talk over top of each other. -

I was hoping for something less laborious and time consuming.
Yes, looks like I’ll have to create a many events and mute the events of the non-speaker as you suggested.
Thanks,

August 27, 2010 at 8:57 pmYou could also use a volume envelope but that might be as much work too.
Pro 9 does have an automated envelope feature if you have that version. -

Yes, I’m running v9.
I have been using vol envelopes. I’m also testing out the VASST Ultimate 4. I’ve used the “normalize audio events” feature. WOW! very useful.
Do you happen to know if the full version ever goes on sale?

August 27, 2010 at 9:13 pmAssuming that you mean Ultimate 4, I don’t recall it going on sale but that’s not say that it hasn’t.
I use Excalibur which is a competitor to it. -

I had never heard of Excalibur. I’ll definitely check it out.

May I please ask what the ‘normalize audio’ feature does for you?
Thanks.

August 27, 2010 at 10:17 pmHi Norman,
I use it to quickly boost the audio level of my event(s) when the max volume on the track still won’t give me the vol level I’m looking for.
I then drop the gain until I have a non-clipping level.
There may be better uses of it, but that’s when I use it.
anyone else???

August 27, 2010 at 10:33 pmHi again Mike.
I’m checking out Excalibur. I see it doesn’t have a photo montage (sold separately) where Ultimate does.
What made you chose Excalibur over Ultimate S (v4)?

August 28, 2010 at 1:51 amGilles, I bought Excalibur for two reasons.
#1 (and more important) is that I like the tool set that came with it.
#2 was that it was on a 1/2 price sale through Digital Juice right when I was ready to buy it.
