  • Best way to protect hard drives on system crash?

Posted by Mike Peterson on January 21, 2013 at 5:37 pm

I have 3 drives plugged in and Final Cut 7 open, referencing 2 of the drives.

My system just crashed when watching video in Chrome, and no mouse or keyboard functions will let me force quit.

I’m about to force restart just using the power button, but I’m worried about causing damage to the drives by disconnecting them without ejecting, while they’re open in Final Cut.

Is there anything to be done?

    (I’m running a 2008 2.8 8-core Mac Pro, Snow Leopard, Final Cut Pro 7.)

    Thanks!

NO harm will befall them. I’ve had to restart that way dozens of times. NO issues.

Thanks so much to both Shane and Rafael.

If my only option now it to shut down with the power button, is it better to power down the drives themselves first, or to leave them on while restarting?

I ended up powering down the drives first (although normally I do it the other way around) and everything ended up ok.

    Thanks guys.

It seems you had no problems, but if the drive were damages it would have happened at the crash and not at the re-boot.

When the crash happened the drives were in effect taken off line improperly anyway.

    Steve.
