  • Best way to import HDV Footage

I Have a new MacPro, 10GB of ram, Blackmagic HD Extreme card, and a Sony M35U deck. The Deck is connected to the blackmagic card via HD/SDI out, no firewire. Is this a better way to capture HDV Footage? Or should I connect the deck straight to my computer via firewire? Are there any drawbacks either way? Also, I’m capturing HDV with the Prores codec in FCP.

You should capture the HDV material to Apple ProRes codec. Forget about editing with HDV material.

This is what we do here with all HDV material, we simply get out of that format at ingest.

Yes, I’ve been capturing with the Prores codec, just wanting to know if its better to capture via HD-SDI output from the deck to the blackmagic card, or Straight firewire from the deck to the computer?

There’s no difference, but since you have the card, use the HD-SDI to connect directly to the card.

SDI is not any different from FireWire, both are totally digital. It is just a matter of your workflow preference and hardware.

As a side note, if you look in the archives regarding SDI for monitoring, you will see many opinions that component is just as good, and that goes for capture as well. I have my Panasonic plasma client screen connected via component, and it looks beautiful in any format.

    Have a wonderful day.

Thanks for the help guys, the one thing I did notice with this way is that there is no deck control with Final Cut, I’m guessing, you only get VTR control with Firewire? Either way, the HD-SDI connetion is working great.

    Kevin,

Capturing HDV via FireWire to ProRes is still in it’s infancy, does not have all the controls or batch capture that other format captures have. So you are probably best off going with your SDI option.

    Have a wonderful day.

Yes there is, you just need to manually change your Device Control to Firewire NTSC (Or PAL if that’s where you are.)

That deck lacks RS422? HD SDI out, but no 9-pin connection? Odd.
