Best way to get a windows media movie coming out og FCP?
Posted by Cateleven on June 18, 2007 at 7:45 pmDoes anyone know the best route/software to use to go from a Final Cut timeline to a windows media file that I can send to networks for their Video on Demand? I have to do about 45 minutes of content each week. Some pieces are 3 minutes and some are 24 minutes long. A batch set up for these compressions would be preferred. Compressor doesn’t do wmv’s…neither does Sorenson squeeze for Macs. Appreciate the advice…

June 18, 2007 at 10:10 pmIf you have the new compressor 3 it, will let you convert to a windows media file. I have not actually tried it myself but I did see the option in compressor 3.

You have to have flip4mac though to get that.

That used to be true with Compressor 2 but not with Compressor 3.
The compressor 3 intro video on apple.com clearly states that you can now do WMV, and by the way you can also now do FLV in compressor also.
I just did a little test and it seemed to work fine. I do not have the pro version of Flip4Mac on my compute, I only have the player plug in.
Here is how you do it in compressor. You first choose your format conversion as if you were going to convert it to a different quicktime file. Then in the inspector change quicktime move to quicktime export components. Then under set encoder type choose WMV, and if you click on options you can even choose what version of windows media you want to export for.
It wasn’t just the interface to compressor that got worked over.

June 19, 2007 at 5:26 ammy bad I was in a rush and failed to see that it did not export the whole thing and that it actually douse use the Flip4Mac plugin.
I just find it odd that apple clames in their intro video that it douse but neglects to say that you must add a plug in

It means that you don’t have to buy any other software (such as Squeeze) all you have to do is buy the plug in. When you buy Squeeze you also have the option of buying the plug in or not for more money, with Compressor, you only have to buy the plug in. Quciktime is not windows media, flip4mac has figured it out, so much so that Microsoft has licensed it from them and stopped development on WMP for the mac. It’s the way it works as if you didn’t know, now you know.

June 20, 2007 at 4:17 amwhats the minimum version of flip4mac you need to export from compressor 3 with custom frame sizes, frame rates and resolution?
Can you do it with the simple $ 50 version and customize the presets in compressor (HD etc…)?
Or is your compressor .wmv export options limited to the flip4mac options available in THAT software.

Yep. Buy the big one if you need HD and VBR recording.
It’s a small price to pay if you need wmvs
