Our approach in the past has always been to re-format cards before we return them to a rental house.

We had an experience last year where a 32GB card was reformatted and partially recorded on but then it was discovered that the media copy before formatting was not backed up properly. We sent the card to Panasonic and they were able to extract the old media off of the card that hadn’t been recorded over. I may not have all of the specifics but somehow Panasonic rescued media that appeared lost on our end.

Since this has happened a producer has asked how I can guarantee no one can do this at a rental house due to the sensitive nature of the footage.

Unlikely? Paranoia? Impossible if you don’t work at Panasonic or Canon?

Easy. Tell your producer to buy his own cards instead of renting. Problem solved.

Well, as far as I know, the method Panasonic uses, they keep close to their chest. It isn’t an option available to people outside of Panasonic. So not everyone can do it.

Use the free P2 Formatter software from Panasonic. They have a secure delete option. It comes in the latest driver package, at least it does with the Mac version.
