I’ve got some nice animated graphics that are interlaced, 30fps. I’d like to de-interlace these things so that I can drop them into a timeline with no field dominance. What’s the best workflow to make these little guys progressive? The format of the animations is:

    Frame rate: 29.97
    Frame size: 720×486
    Compressor: Animation
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC-CCIR 601
    Field Dominance-None

    Thanks,

The best way is to get a copy of the Fieldskit plugin. Next best is to interpret the footage (file>interpret footage>main) and separate fields, I’m assuming lower field first. They won’t be perfect, since the information has to be interpolated between fields, but it should be fine.

You just wrote that the field dominance of the imported, interlaced footage is “none”. That means “progressive”. So I’m a little confused. Unless you mean those are the comp specs, not the footage specs.

Technically the term is “field order”, Apple be damned. Field dominance is something different, not applicable in most situations.

You can easily mix progressive footage with interlaced provided you set it up correctly. Just right-click the footage in your bin, choose “Interpret Footage” and tell AE what type of interlacing is on the file. Once you do that and add the footage to your comp, it will work fine.

If that doesn’t give you the results you want, you can always try Twixtor FieldsKit.

Hi, Steve. Sorry, I totally messed that up. I meant to type “Lower” under field dominance. All of those specs I listed came from the clip properties from within FCP. I realize this is an AE forum, but since these graphics were most likely spawned from AE, I figured this was the appropriate place to ask.

Compressor does quite a nifty job at deinterlacing footage as well…
