  Best Video Transitions for DVD & Internet

  A recent comment by wmc about “thinking mpeg” when shooting video made me wonder about transitions, and which work best both for DVD and for distribution over the Internet at even lower data rates.

  Transitions are a classic situation where lots of data changes very rapidly. But oddly enough the first transition that bothered me was the classic fade-to/from-black. I was turned off by the blocky appearance of what was supposed to be pure black, but was actually “swimming” with very dark but blocky artifacts. I guess I’ve learned to tune that out a bit, but I am curious what other people have observed about the best transitions to use in DVD-destined projects.

  e.g. block dissolves vs. dissolves, quick wipes — has editing for MPEG caused anybody to change his/her practices here?
