  • Best video format for multi-platform viewing??

Posted by Nick Dantonio on February 19, 2010 at 3:52 pm

I’m putting together a video for a band that will be putting it on a “multi-media” cd-rom. The cd-rom will be bought and the video viewed by people with a PC and Mac.

What’s the best format to use so that everyone that buys the cd-rom can view the video?

Also, because its a cd-rom size is a very real issue. The video will not be the only thing on the cd.

    Thanks!

Flash, or a low quality Quicktime. Flash (On2VP6 or MPEG4) is a less destructive compression scheme yet keeping file sizes small. Most people outside the “tech savvy” world won’t have a desktop application to run Flash, maybe adding a “READ-ME” file with a link to download a flash player would help.

Quicktime is my other recommendation. They tend to be fatter video files, but at least most people can view quicktime files, whether they are MAC or Windows users. Good luck.

Ken’s got it right, but why a CDRom?

I can’t think of anyone who has a computer these days and not a DVD drive. And if they don’t, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to view the video smoothly anyway…

Flash is what I would recommend, but you will likely need a copy of the Flash software in order to create Flash projector files.
