    Hi All:
After a long and fruitful life, my 5 year old G-5 is having aging issues. My video card is dying. I am looking for advice on an affordable, effecient replacement.

I am running FCP Studio 2, Photoshop and After Effects. I do a lot of DV, and DCV-PRO HD. I do a lot of compositing and graphics work as well. No 3-D, however.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.
    Roy

If you mean video card as in Capture / IO card, then you want:

AJA Kona LHi if you plan to do no more than 1080 HD work.

AJA Kona 3 if you plan to go to 2k and even higher.

If you mean graphics card for a new Mac Pro, then the ATI 4870 is what you want. Screaming fast and smokes Color. ATI has always outperformed nVidia cards, though I’m not sure why, they seem to be better tuned to what Color is doing.

    Roy,

The best video card for your G5 is the ATI X800 XT, however it is no longer available. And, beware of any used ones on Ebay, as they are most often either non-Mac models that have converted, or a batch of new cards reissue by ATI, both of which were very problematic.

If you can find a working ATI Radeon 9600 on Ebay, which was stock in most G5s, that’s your best bet.

    Walter,

Are you referring to the standard ATI 4870 or the 2x ATI 4870 ?

If you’re referring to 2×4870 on the Apple website, that literally means 2 4870 graphics cards in the machine.
