I’ve been happy with my current setup (G5 Quad, 3,5 gig, OS X 10.4.11, FCP 6.05, Matrox MXO, Apple 23′ & Dell 2407 in addition to a MB Pro 1.83 ghz) and saw no reason to upgrade.

I’m looking to see if I should upgrade my machine and move to FCS3. I’m still not unhappy about my current setup but I would like quicker encoding of h264, for instance. Also, viewing EX1 material thru the MXO on my Dell monitor can only be realized by a software update on the MXO- which will only work under Snow Leopard.

I don’t see a reason to buy new. Let’s say I wanted to go the second hand route so I can upgrade my FCS-suite and get some extra crunching power & be able to view EX footage. What would be the best machine for the money at this point?

[Alexander Wolf] “I don’t see a reason to buy new”

I’m going to disagree with you on this.

I always go new and always get Apple Care. This gives me a machine with a 3 year warranty. You spend a little more now and you have the assurity that you wont have to pay a hefty chunk later on a out of warranty repair. As well as you are going to get a computer that you will be able to bet more life out of.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

One pays top price for being an early adopter. You could argue that the better deals are often to be got from the-line-before-the-latest, especially when there’s no compelling reason to go state of the art.
I have bad experience with Apple Care, sorry to say. The problems with my G5 dual a few years back were downplayed as long as possible, until there was no other option than to give me a new machine. That was nearly a year later…
