  • Best uncompressed export settings for DV PAL

Posted by John Breslin on March 25, 2010 at 5:54 pm

    Hi everyone

I need to get 8 separate timelines on to digibeta so want to export these as single uncompressed files for ease of transport to our out of house digicapture house. Sorry if that’s a mouthful but it makes sense right?

Anyway I’m wondering the best export settings that wont compress the footage, I tried export as quicktime movie, choosing DV compression at highest quality but it looked pretty crap.

    The footage is 16:9

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    #3 Output lossless Quicktime movies

Shane’s Stock Answer #3: How to output lossless Quicktime movies

To export your project so there is no loss in quality, simply go to the File Menu and select EXPORT>QUICKTIME MOVIE. Not Quicktime Conversion, for this will compress the footage. Make sure the settings match your timeline settings, make it self contained, do NOT recompress the footage, and you are set.

This is precisely one of the things Pro Res was designed for.

Just duplicate the sequence, go to Sequence>>Settings, change the compressor to Pro Res, re-render, then Export>>Quicktime Movie at current settings. If you simply export to ProRes from your DV sequence you will achieve nothing other than larger files.

The problem with your answer Shane, as I’m sure you know, is that text and graphics will be compressed horribly with DV compression in 4:1:1 color space.

Using my technique, all text and graphics remain pristine.

Well, your’s DOES add a layer of compression…and since nothing was said about graphics, and that he was working in a DV PAL sequence…my method stands true. Your WILL treat graphics better…

So he can pick and choose.

[Shane Ross] “Well, your’s DOES add a layer of compression…”

True, but one that is not visible to the naked eye.

[Shane Ross] “and since nothing was said about graphics, and that he was working in a DV PAL sequence…my method stands true.”

Also true, but when was the last time you heard of anyone exporting a finished project to DigiBeta without text and graphics?

[Shane Ross] “So he can pick and choose. “

Also true… That’s three things in a row. We both should get a gold star.

I think it is a green check mark. Or the BESSIE stamp. Not sure how that work. At Apple we get a GREEN star.
