Best Transport Laptop for 4K
Yeah me as Sony VEGAS PRO lover and now VolunTourist videoproducer also travelling a lot, just like Chas. So also need to edit these days in 4K, need long battery power, and was quite happy with Acer Aspire 5745 past 4 years! BUT Who knows what is best travel laptop 4me now? THANKS so much for ur advice here! It seems to me that physical technology has not quite yet caught up with 4K. Is there a particular reason you want to shoot in that resolution, other than simply the clarity of picture? As far as I know, Vegas doesn’t render out to 4K resolution, and everything you do will be compressed back down to 1080p anyway. But if you absolutely must use 4K footage, I anticipate the need for multiple external harddrives to store your footage, and a computer with the power to withstand it. I know that’s not much help specifically, but it’s my general advice.

If you look at what people are recommending the general consensus on editing 4K is that for offline editing (i.e., Proxies) for need an Intel Core i7 2.3GHz 4-core/8-threads but for online editing you need Dual Intel Xeon 2GHz six-core (12-cores). Sony recommend a minumum 8-cores, 32GB memory, and a RAID 0 for 4K so you want to look for a laptop with at least these specs.
For online editing, the EUROCOM Panther 5SE can be configured with up to 12-cores so you can configure an 8-core model or go for the whole 12. It also has RAID 0/1/5 so it looks like it should be able to handle 4K just fine. I have no personal experience with this laptop but it looks like it will get the job done.
For offline editing the MSI GT70 0NC look pretty beefy. It has an Core i7 quad with an option for RAID with 2 SSD RAID 0. You can also look at what HP is offering in the ENVY line.

Why would you say that? You can get PC laptops with up to 12-cores and 4 SSD’s in a RAID. That’s plenty of power for 4K. See my other reply.

No true. Sony Vegas Pro was one of the first NLE’s to support 4K! You can render Sony XAVC and XAVC S in 4K. Obviously if you select a render format that only supports HD you can only produce HD but if you select a 4K format you’ll get 4K from Vegas Pro.
