  • best text for AE6.5 pro features?

Posted by Maurice Mahady on March 20, 2006 at 1:20 am

Have just purchased “Creating Motion Graphics Vol 1” by Meyers and now realise I need another text to cover the specific pro features.

Obviously I am considering Vol 2 from this series but some comments on Amazon suggest the text hasnt been updated much since the 5.5 version and as such may not be the best choice. Apart from helping me get my head around some of the more confusing concepts it will be an instructional resource at the college where I teach.

FWIW I find Vol 1 extremely useful so far. I’m in regional Australia and unfortunately cant browse these titles at a bookstore. Ive been using after effects for about 12 mnths now and have the pro DV suite 1.5 (ie AE 6.5, ppro 1.5 etc)

Any suggestions or feedback from users of these texts much appreciated.

I loved Vol 2, the parts on Color Correction, Keying, Motion Tracking/Stabilizing, intergrating with 3D apps (specific info on the most common 3D apps) and especially Expressions (plus a huge Bonus Chapter on expressions)were well worth the price of admission. Lots of real world examples, nuts and bolts stuff.

And they cover the basics of the effectsm except of course the 2 new ones in AE7. Good stuff, I think if you only could have one book this would be the one.

[mauricem] “text hasnt been updated much since the 5.5 version”

There have been huge improvements to working with text in AE since version 5.5. Too many to mention. Your best bet is to have a look at the tutorials here at the COW on text in version 6.5 .

You’ll be WOWed! Then goto the Adobe Website and download the 30-day trial version of AE 7.0 Pro. Enjoy!

thanks for the feedback so far,

maybe I should have been clearer, I’m currently using v6.5 and am looking at the best text (as in book!) to complement the first volume of “creating motion graphics with AE”.

Before buying vol 2 I wanted to check if some of the feedback I read about it being written for 5.5 (and not updated much since) was valid.

I am certainly going through the forums and tutes here but I think I’ll need all the help I can get.

Ppro and Encore… I probably wont bother with additional books but for complex apps like 3dsmax and AE I find a good text/book greatly accelerates my learning and production potential

V7 looks nice but as we only just got 6.5 at the end of last year Ill have to be a patient for while yet…

ok thanks for that, as I said there were a couple of posts on the amazon reviews which indicated otherwise. maybe he was referring to a previous version or amazon just combined all reviews regardless of version?? Anyway Ive ordered it now so its all good!
