When having a project encoded to MPEG2 it would appear that you have much more control if you encode it in Vegas rather than DVDA. As far as I can see in DVDA you can’t change things like single or dual pass, whether you want the encoding done as progressive or interleaved scan. Is this correct?

If this is so then I should be using Vegas rather that DVDA. Correct? When encoding of disks that are just for family use I think that I should encoded everything as dual pass & progressive scan with best quality settings. All our DVD players are capable of displaying progressive scan & its been shown on a 46 in LCD that is capable of displaying up to 1080P.

I often have stills in these projects & instead of setting the switch on for anti flicker for each individual picture I can set it on for everything on the time line. Does doing this have any downside like taking much longer to encode or by effecting the quality of the video portion of the project? If the anti flicker switch has no downside why would anyone ever turn it off?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

Noone seems to answer, so I put my opinion here, which may or may not be correct.

[The Old Fart] “you have much more control if you encode it in Vegas rather than DVDA.”

    That’s correct.

[The Old Fart] “If this is so then I should be using Vegas rather that DVDA. Correct?”

    Of course. Yes.

[The Old Fart] ” think that I should encoded everything as dual pass”

I tried it some time ago (in Vegas4 age), and I did not see any improvement in quality using standard DVD bitrates.
It just took twice the time to render 😉

[The Old Fart] “I often have stills in these projects”

If you have only stills, you are probably OK with progressive.
But if you have some interlaced stuff, I’d prefer to stay interlaced.
Because: with deinterlacing you loose some motion information.
(You may see this motion as horizontal lines if play an interlaced video on a progressive display without deinterlacing)
If you loose it, you’ll never get it back.

I’m not sure if I could help, in addition I can’t answer your other questions 🙁
